gmp compilation problem

Hello:

I have been trying to compile STk-3.0. I need it for LINK.
I am using Linux 2.0.33, gcc 2.7.2.2, libc 5.4.33.
Here is the error i get.

  gcc -I. -O -g -c mpz_sqrtrem.c -o mpz_sqrtrem.o
  gcc: Internal compiler error: program cc1 got fatal signal 6
  make: *** [mpz_sqrtrem.o] Error 1

Can someone please help me to get rid of it.

PS: Even if i use stk 3.1.1 and/or gmp 2.0.2, i get the same error.
Perhaps there is something wrong with my libc and gcc combination??
