   I think that there are more advantages than you mention, particularly
   if you are trying to get busy people to try your software. Since
   there are no hard-coded paths in the executable you can distribute
   binaries.

And wouldn't an environment variable solve the problem ?
I think stk can already use a STK_LIBRARY variable, just set
it correctly in your .profile/.login. (as you probably do for lots of
other packages).
