difference with tk/no-tk

I am curious about something that one of my coworkers pointed out to me.
I see the same phenomenon on both 2.1.6 & 2.2.0. I am running on a sun4m.
I created a test file:
        (display "howdy")
        (newline)

If I run
        stk -f test
The system prints "howdy", then hangs within STk.
If I run
        stk -no-tk -f test
or
        snow -f test
The system prints "howdy", then exits from STk.

Why does the presence of tk affect what happens?
