Incremental redifintion of classes and methods?

In STk, when a class is redefined all subclasses and all methods of
the class and subclasses must be redefined. Is there a recommened coding
style that minimizes the impact of this during development? Is there a
plan to make such things more incremental as in Common Lisp?
