process functions under HP-UX

I tried using the process functions for the first time on
HP-UX and my machine goes to its knees and the harddrive starts
thrashing indefinitely when I try even:

       (run-process "ls")

The listing appears in stdout and my drive starts thrashing.
Before I started investigating this I wondered if anyone
else had any problems on HP-UX.
