weird arith bug on 4.0.1 under Solaris

I ran up against the following weird behavior recently:

STk> (version)
"4.0.1"
STk> (machine-type)
"SunOS-5.7-i86pc"
STk> (+ '(+ 2 3) 4 5)

Shouldn't this give "not a number" or some other error message?
